Year 3. Grade 8.
In our MYP Language and Literature courses, the Statement of Inquiry (SOI) guides our instruction. The SOIs and the accompanying works of literature will give you an outline for the year.
Unit 1 -- Perspective informs point-of-view and theme, affecting peoples, boundaries, exchange and interaction.
This unit focuses on on the thrilling short stories of Edgar Allan Poe and even an excerpt from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. We'll take a look at what shapes perspective, and how perspective, in turn, can shape everything else. The MYP Assessment for this unit is one of my favorites!
Unit 2 -- Form advises style and structure, potentially demonstrating artistry and craft.
In Unit 2, we focus primarily on studying poetry because it's ideal for examining form, style and structure. We will also spend some in-class time reading aloud from a verse novel, and we'll take a look at how a writer can string poems together to create the arc of a story. So not only will we look at each individual poem's structure, we'll also determine how those poems contribute to the traditional structure of a novel.
Unit 3 -- Communication reflects purpose and context and can influence power and privilege.
Okay, truly. This is probably my FAVORITE unit of Year 3. Much of the literature we study will focus on the idea of memorializing someone or something, and we will learn a lot about the controversy surrounding a major event in our nation's history: the Vietnam War. We'll focus on determining the way in which a statement is communicated, and how that might impact its message.
Unit 4 -- Connections reveal intertextuality across genres, emphasizing social constructs of reality.
Wait, did I say Unit 3 is my favorite? It might be Unit 4. We have the opportunity to read one of my favorite writers (two-time-Pulitzer-Prize-winning Colson Whitehead) and to take a look at literature that comes from ancient times (like the Bible) influences literature written in contemporary times (like today, like that book in the picture above). It's all about connections, and I really love making connections.
